I have made many SEO mistakes. However, failing provides a new experience and nothing else. So I’ve learned from my failures and keep improving my skills.
Most of my mistakes are related to generic strategies of copying other writers.
I cannot write like Neil Patel or Brian Dean because their styles are not mine. Do not get me wrong; I love and respect prominent influencers and the best experts, but people know their content and want something new and unique.
That is why creating your writing style is essential to satisfy the target audience and be yourself. Let me tell you more about this.
Stop Being Someone Else
Many content creators get high engagement on TikTok by dancing or singing, and many more content creators cannot compete with them because they cannot sing or dance but keep chasing high engagement on their weak sides.
TikTok is not only for those two niches. Just look at Khaby Lame, who proves this by creating straightforward content that goes viral, making him the most popular TikToker on the planet, with over a hundred million followers.
The same thing happens on Google!
For example, Wikipedia has a super effective writing style to get the most SEO traffic in all niches and topics. That is great for them, but it does not mean all other websites should do the same. Your success depends on having your own solid writing style.
Content creators often burn out and give up from doing things they hate. Do not copy Wikipedia and your competitors who rank their websites by imitating their writing styles. Enjoy the process of finding your own style and voice.
Learn Your Target Audience
Google considers users’ intent when ranking websites. So, in the end, you should create content for a human being who finds value from consuming your content.
Your audience might prefer straightforward content with many details, new ideas, successful stories, breaking news, etc. Your writing style should satisfy their intent because they give a solid reason for Google to rank your content.
Start learning your audience by opening content in the top 10 results on Google. Your main goal is to find how to create better content with your writing style.
How to Find Your Writing Style?
Here are the two best ways: read and write–a lot!
Reading helps you learn from others. I love reading books, blog posts, tutorials, guides, social media posts, etc.
People watch TV for more than 5 hours every day and yet complain they have no time to read. The best place for your TV is a trash can. I love these quotes:
- Poor people own big TVs, and rich people own big libraries.
- Big owners are big learners.
Read many different authors and learn their writing styles. Then, find what you like the most and go practice.
Writing regularly and consistently is very important. One of my favorite authors is Jack London, who wrote the incredible book Martin Eden about a guy who had no education but could overcome almost everyone in his life. The main character wrote every day with perseverance that his time was coming. While this book is fiction, many think that Jack London was describing himself.
If your goal is to become great at writing, start writing 1,000+ words daily without any excuses about why you can’t. Great athletes train twice a day; great singers and actors exercise daily. No excuses. If you stop, you will face setbacks and not achieve all you are capable of.
Four Types of Writing
All keywords are related to different users’ intent, and writing styles force copywriters to change writing techniques according to a specific keyword.
Consider four writing styles:
- Expository works well for blog articles and ranks high on Google because of educating the audience and covering a buying journey.
- Persuasive works in e-commerce landing pages and advertisements by making a call-to-action.
- Descriptive works of poetry and fiction create a picture or vision in readers’ minds without relying on facts.
- Narrative works for fiction by constructing a story.
As you can see, two of these styles typically relate to website content, but all rules existed before innovators changed them. Could you do the same? No? Why not? Viral content appeals by using new methods that others have ignored.
Writing Is Not for Everyone
Many content creators hate writing, and that is perfectly fine. Do not force yourself to do what you hate or dislike. SEO consists of many other extraordinary aspects: technical optimization, UX, link building, etc.
Cooperate with great writers who understand your audience and can relate to them with their unique styles. For example, I love writing but cannot write for many topics online because my experience covers SEO and digital marketing. I cannot help the audience with weight loss or investing tips because those are not my skills, but I can find someone who can satisfy their intent and lead them in the right direction.
Be yourself and consider your audience in your writing style. If you do that, people and Google will love it and consume more of your content. The best words for improving writing are consistency, perseverance, patience, and loving what you do.
