Written to the sitemaps.org 0.9 protocol every major engine reads

How to create an XML sitemap from a list of URLs

Nothing to install and nothing to configure. Three steps and the sitemap is on your machine.

Fill in one row per URL, or paste a whole list into the bulk textarea once you have a free account. Use absolute URLs that include the protocol, in the same canonical form your pages use.

The lastmod column is optional and starts empty — fill it in only where you know the real date of a change. priority and changefreq sit behind a Legacy switch and stay out of the file unless you turn them on.

You get a complete urlset document — or several files plus a sitemap index once the list passes 50,000 URLs or 50 MB, with an HTML version alongside it. Upload it to your site root, add the Sitemap: line to robots.txt, then submit the URL in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

A sitemap has 4 elements inside each entry, and search engines treat them very differently. This is what each one accepts and what it is actually worth.

One fully-qualified absolute URL including the protocol, with the 5 XML entities escaped

It has to match the canonical version of the page. http and https, www and non-www, trailing slash and no trailing slash are all different URLs here.

W3C Datetime — either YYYY-MM-DD or a full timestamp with an offset

Yes, but only when it is consistently accurate

The field stays empty unless you fill in the date column yourself. Set it only where you know the real date of a significant change — Google trusts the field based on how reliable it has proved on your site.
